In a heartfelt tribute during Shaffer Elementary School’s Community Pride Night on Thursday, May 8, Principal and Superintendent Josh Blackburn announced that “after decades of unwavering dedication, hard work, and heart, Shaffer Union Elementary School is proud to announce that the school gymnasium will now bear the name of Ray Bailey — a man whose legacy is etched into every corner of this campus.

A newly unveiled metal engraved sign now hangs outside the gymnasium, reading:

“Dedicated in honor of Coach Ray Bailey, whose years of leadership, passion, and commitment to Shaffer athletics shaped generations of students.”

Bailey, a respected math and science teacher and a cornerstone of Shaffer’s athletic programs, is set to retire at the end of this school year. The surprise dedication left the usually composed coach humbled and nearly speechless.

“I am still having a hard time processing it,” Bailey said.

Reflecting on Ray’s lasting impact, Principal and Superintendent Blackburn shared: “Ray spent years teaching at Shaffer, guiding students with both wisdom and humor. But his contributions didn’t end in the classroom. For years, he ran Shaffer’s athletics program, organizing and coaching countless games, practices, and track meets. He was a constant presence — not just supervising but showing up, showing heart, and showing the kids what it means to lead by example.

From lining the fields to supporting fundraisers, Ray was always there. His commitment was never about recognition, but about doing right by the students and the school he loved. Naming the gym after him is a small way of honoring the huge impact he’s had on our community.

Ray Bailey didn’t just work at Shaffer — he helped build it. Now, every time students step into the gym, they’ll be reminded of the standard he set and the example he left behind.

Thank you, Ray. This is your house now.”
