This warning will remain in place until 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Winter Driving Safety Recommendations from the National Weather Service

Weather-related vehicle accidents cause over 6,000 fatalities and injure more than 480,000 people each year. If you need to travel during snow or freezing rain, proceed with caution and reduce speed for greater safety. Near-freezing temperatures often indicate icy road conditions, so adjust your driving accordingly. Watch out for fallen power lines and branches, as their weight can cause them to drop. Avoid driving in these conditions if possible. If travel is unavoidable, choose routes that have fewer tree and power line obstructions. Do not touch any downed power lines and immediately report them to 911 if encountered.

The following are additional recommendations for driving in winter weather:

  • Inform friends or family about your travel plans, including your destination, route, and expected arrival time, especially if severe weather is anticipated.
  • Keep your fuel tank full and carry essentials such as a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
  • If stranded, contact someone to alert them of your situation. Avoid leaving your vehicle to seek help. Signal for assistance by attaching a cloth to your car’s antenna or mirror. Use the dome light and flashers to make your vehicle more visible.
  • Be mindful of snow plows, maintaining a safe distance from them. Only pass a plow when the road ahead is clearly visible.
  • Before departing, carefully check road conditions to ensure your journey is safe.
