September has been designated as Pedestrian Safety Month in California, with the Susanville Police Department urging everyone to prioritize pedestrian safety on the roads.

Data projections from the Governors Highway Safety Association reveal that pedestrian fatalities reached 7,508 in the U.S. in 2022, the highest number since 1981. In California, pedestrian deaths account for over a quarter of all traffic-related fatalities.

To enhance pedestrian safety, the Susanville Police Department will conduct a focused traffic safety operation on September 14th from 4:00 p.m. to midnight. This operation will target dangerous driver behaviors such as speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield, and disregarding stop signs or signals that pose risks to pedestrians.

The Susanville Police Department offers safety tips for both drivers and pedestrians, emphasizing the importance of avoiding distractions and being vigilant on the road. Recommendations include obeying speed limits, yielding to pedestrians, and making oneself visible at night.

Additionally, individuals are encouraged to participate in the Go Safely Movement, a traffic safety survey by the California Office of Traffic Safety, to share their thoughts on pedestrian safety.

This program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
