Construction is underway at Seneca Healthcare’s new hospital site. After overcoming numerous challenges, the project is finally taking shape. Chelsea Outland, Communications Director for Seneca, noted that it took three bidding processes and some changes to the construction design from a component build to a traditional design-build to reach this point.

CEO Shawn McKenzie expressed excitement as earth-moving heavy equipment operators worked to level the ground making way for the hospital’s roads. McKenzie highlighted that a unique feature incorporated into the build are heated sidewalks and a helipad, designed to prevent snow and ice buildup during the Basin’s cold winters, which will enhance response times during critical emergencies.

Supervisor Tom McGowan, who has been working with Seneca’s administration to support the project, attended Wednesday’s Coffee Kickstart, noting the amount of work that went in to see this day become reality. He also acknowledged the numerous challenges faced along the way including USDA funding hurdles, a Great Blue Heron delaying construction, and going through three bidding processes.

Jerri Nielsen, President of the Hospital’s Board, expressed her relief that this day has finally arrived and outlined some of the benefits the new hospital will bring to the Almanor Basin. These included expanded services for residents, and attracting a qualified workforce.

If the project stays on schedule, the first patients could be walking through the doors in early 2027.
