Nearing the 6 dollar mark once again, gas prices continue to soar overnight, yet some relief may be in sight. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has just approved the early use of winter-blend gasoline following a request by Governor Gavin Newsom.
Required only in CA, the special blend is cheaper to produce because it contains more butane, according to AAA, and the savings are expected to be passed on when you fill up at the pump. Newsom says prices are expected to begin to decline over the next few weeks.
CARB, in its announcement, said the reason for the spike in prices is not clear within the industry, yet contributes the hike to “a recent refinery fire, West Coast refinery maintenance challenges, Hurricane Ian, and other geopolitical events.”
AAA says the state’s average cost per gallon is $6.07, while the region’s average across Lassen, Plumas, and Sierra Counties rests not far behind at 5.77 per gallon.
