Trash service may be costing Portola homes more following a special meeting of the City council.
A rate increase has been requested from Intermountain Disposal. The increase comes as part of an ongoing agreement to account for the rising cost to do business. The increase is based on a one-year average of price changes in consumer indices and fuel prices. A year ago, the calculated increase was nearly 8 % but was capped at 5.0% for 2022, the remaining nearly 3% was rolled over to the 2023 rate increase.
Now in addition to the next year’s calculated trash collection rate of 11 and a half percent, Intermountain Disposal is asking to add the remaining 3% from the previous year as well as add an additional nearly 3% for transfer station increases to a total an increase of almost 17% for their trash pick-up services. The requested rates would raise your service for waste carts by up to 4 dollars.
The council can decide to approve the hefty increase, keep the rates capped at 5%, or approve a rate between 5 and 17%.
The special meeting of the council will be held Tuesday at 6 pm at city hall or streamed virtually. Visit CityofPortola.com for the agenda and virtual streaming access.
