The Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District announces the curtailment period affecting wood burning in the Portola area has begun for the year. The curtailment period extends from Sept. 1 to April 30 each year.
During this period, no residential or open outdoor vegetation burning is allowed on curtailment days, per District Rule 231. These days occur when the air quality index is forecast to be above 71.
The curtailment program affects the federal nonattainment portion of Plumas County known as Zone 1. Prohibiting residential or commercial burning of vegetation on designated wood burning curtailment days helps improve air quality during adverse atmospheric conditions, said the air district. The district offers an interactive map on its Portola area webpage.
Open outdoor vegetation burning is never permitted within the Portola city limits. “Please help us to continue to improve our local air quality by always checking if it’s an allowable burn day in your area,” say district personnel.
