Public Safety Announcement: Mountain Lion Sighting in Loyalton, California – January 14, 2025
The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of a mountain lion sighted in broad daylight near Church and Zollinger Streets in Loyalton (approximately 300 yards from the Loyalton Elementary School). The lion was seen taking a domesticated cat before running off. This incident happened just after school was released for the day. Deputies located the mountain lion and attempted to euthanize it due to the public safety concern it posed. However, given the location and limited options, the lion was ultimately hazed (scared) out of the neighborhood. While mountain lion sightings are not uncommon in our region, a daytime sighting in a populated area is unusual and warrants extra caution. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) was contacted and will be assessing the situation.
We urge all residents and visitors in the Loyaton area to exercise caution and report any mountain lion sightings to the Sheriff’s Office.

Tips for Staying Safe:
1. Keep pets indoors, especially at night.
2. If you must take pets outside, keep them on a leash and close to you.
3. Avoid hiking or jogging alone, especially at dawn, dusk, or night.
If you encounter a mountain lion:
1. Stay calm and do not run.
2. Make yourself appear larger by raising your arms and speaking firmly.
3. Slowly back away, giving the lion an opportunity to retreat.
4. If the lion acts aggressively, throw objects, yell, and fight back if attacked.
