This week Modoc county received the 5 million dollars secured by Assemblywoman Dahle in July of last year to pay off the county’s legacy debt.
Rural County Representatives of California said it’s not a problem only Modoc county is experiencing that “Throughout California, rural hospitals are struggling to meet critical financial obligations needed to ensure quality services for [people].” Modoc’s legacy debt stems from when a longstanding hospital under county control moved into a special district, leaving the county with the bill. This disproportionately impacted everyone in the county for decades as the county had to make 25% cuts to general fund departments, consolidate operations, and lay off employees. Translating into a lack of road maintenance and public safety and impacting the schools. In just over a decade, the county has been able to pay back a third of the debt.
The 5 million secured will finally help Modoc restore important programs and services to the people.
