Modoc National Forest says the snowpack around the forest is impressive, matching that of the snowpack across the state. The Forest Service completed its largest round of snow surveys for the 2023 season.
A survey was completed at Blue Lake to round out the month of March, revealing an average snow depth of almost 4 ft. The Forest Service says that is nearly two feet higher than measurements taken on February 1st. The 30yr average snow depth for April 1st around the lake is 18 inches.
The Cedar Pass snow survey was completed on March 29th. The average snow depth was 6.5 ft, 33 inches higher than the Feb 1st survey. That makes this year’s snowpack double the 30yr April 1st average at Cadar Pass.
At Adin Mountain, the average snow depth was 6.0 ft.
While Medicine Lake has the most significant jump, with an average snow depth of nearly 11 feet, the area recorded only 30 inches last year. This year’s snowpack doubles that of the 10yr average snow depth for the lake.
Snow surveys are considered significant at the April 1st date as snow depth is typically at its peak.
