Modoc National Forest is preparing for a major event this fall. Beginning on October 28, 2024, the USDA Forest Service will initiate the gathering of approximately 500 wild horses from the Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory. This operation is part of the ongoing efforts to manage the wild horse population as outlined in the 2013 Management Plan. According to the most recent census, the area is home to between 651 and 998 wild horses, prompting the need for population control measures.

The gathering will be conducted by CD Warner Livestock LLC using mechanized equipment and bait traps, methods aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient collection of the horses. For those interested in observing the gather, limited viewing spots are available for up to six individuals per day, with reservations required in advance via email or phone.

Observers must meet at 225 West Eighth St. in Alturas by 7 a.m. and be prepared for a full day in rugged conditions without restroom facilities or cell service. It is crucial for viewers not to interfere with the gather operations.

These types of gatherings are not without controversy. Animal rights groups have raised concerns over the welfare of the horses during these operations, arguing that such methods can be stressful and potentially harmful to the animals. They advocate for alternative population management strategies that do not involve roundups, such as fertility control measures. The debate continues as stakeholders weigh the challenges of balancing ecological health with animal welfare considerations.
