Local Teens Restore Beloved Cross Just in Time for Easter

A group of local teens took it upon themselves to restore a beloved community symbol that had been damaged by recent storms — and they did it just in time for Easter.

The “Old Rugged Cross,” a well-known wooden cross that stands near the entrance to Surprise Valley along Highway 299, was blown down in heavy winds several months ago. Over the weekend, five young men — Paul, Lige, Nate, Arturo and Iina — responded to what many are calling a divine nudge, choosing Palm Sunday to raise the cross once again.

Led by their youngest helper, Elliot, who locals affectionately called the “little foreman,” the boys faced setbacks as they began work Saturday afternoon. But by Sunday, the cross stood tall once more, a welcome sight to all who enter the valley.
