Fire Near the Court House Destroys Homeless Encampment

On July 6, 2024, at approximately 1:23 pm, Truck 1 of the Susanville Fire Department (SFD), was leaving the Sierra Center parking lot and noticed a large column of black smoke coming from the area of the County Courthouse. Truck 1 arrived to find brush and grass burning in the vacant field, moving toward the Courthouse. Truck 1 assumed command and deployed a hose line along the right flank of the fire, protecting the Courthouse.

CalFire E2261 arrived on the scene and used a mobile attack to attack the left flank of the fire. Truck 1 and E2261 stopped the fire’s forward progress. SFD E628 and CalFire Devil’s Garden Crew 4 arrived on the scene, securing the fire’s perimeter and assisting with mop-up and complete extinguishment.

Personnel could not determine the cause of this .02-acre fire as all evidence was destroyed in the fire. The fire did consume a known homeless encampment. The firefighters were not injured.
