An experienced hiker was found dead on Eagle Peak Summit Trail in the Modoc National Forest.
On July 2nd, the Modoc County Sheriff’s office says the body was discovered by another hiker about 1000 feet below the summit on the southeast side of the trail that ascends to over 9000 feet in elevation. On July 3rd, the sheriff’s office, along with the US Forest Service and CalFire personnel, were able to recover the body that has been identified as a 44-year-old man from Oakland, CA, Ben Kiyoshi Nomura-Weingrow. The man was said to have been familiar with the trail and an avid hiker.
The Modoc Sheriff’s office says foul play is not suspected in his death but adds that an autopsy will be performed today to determine the cause of death.
