Crews will burn the timber understory as part of the ongoing project in cooperation with Sierra Pacific Industries, Pennisula, and Hamilton Branch Fire.
The department says that work will continue throughout the month and into June when weather conditions allow safe operations.
If you are driving through the area, including along hwy 147, you are asked not to report the smoke.
The project is being completed to further protect the Hamilton Branch Peninsula and Berry Creek communities from wildfires and strengthen evacuation routes.
