Expanded OHV Use Across Lassen NF Approval Nears Final Stages

SHARE NOW

The Lassen National Forest has entered the objection period for its draft decision to extend OHV use across all districts. The proposal is to increase the mileage of existing OHV-permitted roads and connections to an extra 150 miles.

This project resulted from stakeholders and multiple county requests to consider the additional riding opportunities.

Fifty-three comments were received on the project’s scope during the review process, many of which cited the project’s impacts on wildlife and the preservation of the land. In contrast, others made comments such as opening specific or all forest service roads to OHV use. However, forest officials countered that not all roads could be considered for OHV use due to maintenance requirements to allow the continued use of passenger vehicles to traverse the roadways. The forest service cites that OHV use degrades the road, and the
maintenance costs would be far beyond the Forest’s ability to cover.

Those who made initial comments during the scoping period of the project can submit a final objection within the 45-day timeline from December 15th.
