Susanville CHP responded to a crash involving a pilot truck and a motorcycle on SR 36 at Eagle Lake Road around 9 p.m. Monday.
According to officers, Stephen McDowell bypassed traffic controls at a construction stop on Fredonyer Summit, where Caltrans is resurfacing the highway. McDowell, on his motorcycle, confronted and physically fought with one of the workers. He eventually left the scene but was pursued by Richard Massie, who exited the construction zone in a crew pilot truck.
Massie overtook McDowell and struck his motorcycle, causing McDowell to lose control and crash. Despite the collision, McDowell was not seriously injured.
Massie was arrested for DUI, assault with a deadly weapon, and causing injury. He could face suspension of his driver’s license or felony charges if found guilty of road rage.
The Lassen County District Attorney’s Office will hold McDowell accountable for assaulting a construction worker during the incident at Fredonyer Summit.
