After the devastating fire that destroyed the historic early Friday morning, the Susanville City Council will meet to review the emergency actions taken so far and decide if they should continue. The fire, which started around 3 a.m. on November 1 at 830 Main Street, left the hotel and the neighboring Utopia Management building severely damaged, prompting immediate steps to secure the area and protect public safety.
California law requires the Council to evaluate these emergency measures and determine if they’re still needed. If ongoing actions are necessary, a 4/5 vote is required to bypass the usual bidding process, allowing the city to respond quickly.
City staff will provide a report detailing the emergency actions taken since the fire, which left Main Street closed from Weatherlow to Union Streets for several hours following the fire. The financial impact of these measures is still unknown, as costs are still being calculated.
The Council’s decision will inform the community of what steps lie ahead to ensure safety in the area and manage the aftermath of this tragic loss to the community’s history.
The council meets Wednesday, November 6th at 5 pm in City Hall, you can view the full agenda by visiting the city’s website.
