Calfire begins defensible space inspections throughout Lassen Plumas and Modoc counties; you may see them throughout your neighborhood. A defensible space must be maintained around structures and homes at all times in state responsibility areas as required by the state forest and fire laws; these planned inspections are in place to help you better prepare and protect your property from being impacted by wildfire. Lassen Modoc Unit Calfire Battalion Chief Mark Rotlisberger says, “This also helps the limited number of suppression resources better protect properties should a fire be burning toward it.”
You can expect to see the inspector team around homes in SRA areas, where they will be knocking on doors to announce their intentions for the inspection in compliance with the CA Public Resource Code.
If you are not home, the team may inspect your property from your sidewalk or path and will not walk around your home without checking with you first. If there is a gate, they will stay outside and inspect if they can.
CALFIRE inspectors will be working on completing inspections for structures throughout Lassen Modoc and Plumas counties that did not receive assessments last year within the SRA as a first priority and then start reinspecting once that is completed. The goal is that every property is inspected at least once every three years. Once your inspection is completed, you will receive a copy, and a copy will go to the state’s database.
