Avoid Outages this Valentine’s Day, Tie Down Mylar Balloons

You may be gifting your Valentine balloons today, but electric companies hope you won’t.

The holiday of love sees more metallic, or mylar, balloons sold than any other holiday. This is the time of year when PG&E and LMUD see an uptick in outages caused by the festive gifts. When metallic balloons happen to escape and drift into power lines, they short the circuit.

Last year PG&E reports that over 400 outages occurred due to balloons.

LMUD adds that if you choose to have a festive bouquet delivered to your valentines, ensure they are tied down with a weight to avoid outages and that they appreciate your help in their commitment to providing a safe workplace for employees and a safe community for you and your loved ones.
