BLM Completes Wild horse and Burro Gather

The Bureau of Land Management has completed its gathering and removal of excess wild horses and burros. The gathering was conducted in the Twin Peaks Herd Management Area to the Northeast of Susanville. A total of over 2100 wild horses and over 300 burros were captured. 110 mares will be treated with fertility control and released back into the range, and the BLM plans to remove just over 1800 wild horses and all the captured wild burros from the lands. Emily Ryan, Manager of the eagle Lake Field Office said reducing the wild horse and burro population reduces pressure on rangeland resources, helping to keep the lands healthy. Those animals that have been captured will be available for public adoption or purchase with details to be announced. The BLM says the Twin Peaks HMA can support up to a near 750 wild horses and just over 100 wild burros and will be conducting flyovers to confirm the remaining population count in the coming weeks.
