A loud explosion in Doyle was the result of a planned military ordnance detonation. The Lassen County sheriff’s were called out to a property in Doyle after the owner located what they believed to be an old military shell. Deputies determined the device was unspent and contacted the US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal who was able to assess the device. It was determined it likely contained high explosives and was partially decomposed, making transport unsafe. The sheriff was advised the device needed to be detonated on site for removal. The area was evacuated by the sheriffs and California Highway Patrol, and then EOD used high explosives to detonate the ordnance. No physical harm to anyone resulted and the ordnance poses no further threat.
