On Saturday, September 5th, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) was alerted to the presence of a gunshot victim at Fairchild Medical Center. When Deputies responded, they located the victim, 49 year old Baojue Lin of Elk Grove, CA and noted that he had been injured on his head, shoulder, face, and torso from birdshot.
Mr. Lin informed the SCSO Deputies that at approximately 10:30 am that morning, he had been cooking breakfast at his father’s property when he heard his dogs barking and the sound of gunshots. When Mr. Lin went outside to investigate, he stated that he was immediately struck by several pellets of a shotgun. Upon being hit, Mr. Lin drove to Fairchild Medical Center to receive medical aid.
During his interview with Deputies, Mr. Lin could not identify the shooter, but noted that it was one of two brothers who lived at the adjacent property on Karina Drive near County Road A-12. Deputies then visited the adjacent property where they encountered 39 year old Russell Asher of Montague. Asher stated that he had fired multiple rounds after Mr. Lin’s dog ran towards his property line. Asher also stated he fired at Lin because Lin was firing at him with a handgun.
After conducting a thorough search of both properties, the SCSO found no evidence to support Mr. Asher’s statement. However, Deputies did locate Asher’s firearm as well as the spent rounds that struck Mr. Lin. Asher was placed under arrest for violating section 245 (a)(2) and 243 (d) of the California Penal Code, or assault with a firearm and battery that caused great bodily harm. Asher was then transferred to the Siskiyou County Jail for booking.
