A lightning strike sparked a small wildfire on the Plumas National Forest Monday afternoon as thunderstorms moved across the region, prompting firefighters to respond quickly while officials warn additional lightning could lead to more fire starts in the coming days.

The fire, named the Clouds Fire, was reported on the Beckwourth Ranger District near Carmen Saddle, east of Nakoma Resort. Fire crews contained the blaze at approximately one-half acre, and it is now in patrol status.

The thunderstorms that moved through the area Monday produced rainfall in many locations, but forest officials say additional thunderstorms are expected through Tuesday, bringing the potential for more lightning strikes.

Even after wet storms, lightning-caused fires can remain hidden for days or even weeks before becoming visible as vegetation dries. Because of that, firefighters will continue monitoring the forest for possible holdover fires and respond to any new incidents as they are discovered.

The Plumas National Forest said local and visiting firefighting resources remain stationed across the forest and are prepared to respond to additional wildfire activity if needed.

Forest officials also remind residents and visitors to avoid activities that could spark a wildfire and to report any suspected fires by calling 911.
