Caltrans Reports Progress on Highway Projects in Lassen and Plumas Counties

Drivers in Lassen and Plumas counties are seeing progress on two major Caltrans highway improvement projects, with one nearing completion while the other continues to cause delays.

On State Route 70 near Portola, Caltrans says the most disruptive work on the Beckwourth Capital Preventive Maintenance Project is now complete. Crews have finished major paving operations and shoulder improvements, significantly reducing impacts to motorists.

Work will continue through the end of July and into early August as crews complete guardrail installation, culvert work, sign installation, and other finishing touches. Drivers may still encounter occasional traffic control, but Caltrans expects delays to be minimal.

The project is designed to extend the life of the highway, improve ride quality, enhance safety, and reduce future maintenance needs.

Meanwhile, on State Route 36 about nine miles west of Susanville, work continues on the Devil’s Corral Safety Project, where motorists should continue to expect around-the-clock traffic control.

Drivers traveling through the construction zone should plan for delays of up to 25 minutes as crews widen shoulders, install rumble strips and new guardrail, improve drainage, relocate utilities, and clear vegetation. The improvements are intended to reduce the number and severity of crashes along the corridor.

Caltrans is reminding motorists to allow extra travel time, slow down through work zones, and watch for construction crews and equipment.
