A suspected drunk driver is behind bars after a wrong-way crash on U.S. Highway 395 late Saturday night left another driver with critical injuries.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 11:14 p.m. on June 28 on northbound Highway 395 just north of Bordertown.
Investigators say a Nissan Rogue was traveling south in the northbound lanes when it collided head-on with a Subaru Impreza traveling in the correct direction.
The driver of the Subaru suffered critical injuries and was flown from the scene by air ambulance for emergency medical treatment.
CHP officers conducted a DUI investigation on the driver of the Nissan and determined he was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The collision closed both northbound lanes of Highway 395 for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene. The roadway reopened at approximately 3:45 a.m. Sunday.
The crash remains under investigation.
The CHP is reminding motorists that impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk. If you encounter a wrong-way driver, officials recommend slowing down, turning on your hazard lights, moving safely out of the vehicle’s path, and calling 911 as soon as it is safe to do so.
