In a year marked by financial challenges, the Modoc County community once again demonstrated extraordinary generosity by filling and delivering 548 Christmas stockings to soldiers and veterans. What started as a small initiative blossomed into a powerful show of support, reaffirming Modoc County’s unwavering commitment to those who have served.

Local students played a vital role in this effort. Members of the SEALS After School Program worked tirelessly alongside students from Alturas Preschool, Modoc Vineyard Academy, Mrs. Alvarez’s second grade class, and Mrs. Elder’s fourth grade class. These young volunteers sorted, counted, and packed thousands of donated items, gaining valuable lessons about service, gratitude, and giving back.

Thanks to the community’s kindness, 150 stockings were sent to the Fresno VA Hospital, and 398 stockings were delivered to veterans at the Reno VA. Beyond stockings, several boxes of food and non-perishable items were donated to the Veterans Community Center, supporting homeless veterans who depend on its services.

A highlight of this year’s success was the overwhelming participation in the Treats for Troops Halloween candy drive, which collected 6,839 pieces of candy. This generous donation brightened the season for many veterans and a nearby California National Guard unit. Altogether, 15,547 stocking stuffers were gathered across all drives and donations, a testament to the community’s heartfelt gratitude and generosity.

The SEALS students, staff, and volunteers extend sincere thanks to the many partners who made this possible, including Plumas Bank, US Bank, Holiday Market, Grocery Outlet, Modoc Medical Center, Modoc Physical Therapy, Canby Clinic, Alturas Elementary School, Modoc Vineyard Academy, the Modoc County Office of Education, Noon Rotary Club, Sunrise Rotary Club, and Hadwick Family Farm.

To every business, student, organization, family, and individual who donated, volunteered, collected candy, packed stockings, or supported this effort in any way—thank you. Because of your generosity, hundreds of veterans and soldiers will feel the warmth of home, the spirit of Christmas, and the enduring gratitude of a community that stands behind them.
