Portola is crushing it again with the reopening of a local recycling center. California Redemption Value refunds are back on the east side of Plumas County in Portola. Grizzly Creek Recycling opened in April at 225 Taylor Avenue, reusing the former Daws Recycling site after city review in 2024.
Owner Desmond Waelder operates a state certified “weigh and pay” center that accepts CRV labeled beverage containers in aluminum, glass, certain types of plastic and bi-metal (an object constructed from two different types of metal bonded together in layers). Cardboard is also accepted during business hours. Scrap metal is not taken and should go to local transfer stations. Non-CRV drop off items accepted without payment include wine boxes and #5 polypropylene food grade beverage containers, according to signs posted on site. The center is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Waelder noted that daily personal load limits apply.
For many residents, the return of a buy-back option means turning trash into cash and easier drives that are easier on the wallet.
Before Grizzly Creek opened in April, the only nearby choices were the transfer stations at Delleker or Graeagle, which accept CRV containers but do not pay refunds.
Residents will find posted refund information at the Grizzly Creek scale house. For questions about materials and limits, check the signs on site during operating hours or ask one of the attendants.
