The California Department of Transportation has announced a full closure of State Route 172 starting Monday, June 9. The closure will extend from Mt. Lassen Avenue to 5.5 miles east of the junction with State Route 36 in Mineral (Hole in the Ground Road) to facilitate emergency restoration efforts related to the Park Fire. Although this closure is not within Plumas County, it may affect travel to and from the northern part of the county.
Access to the Mill Creek area will remain open via the eastern junction with SR 36, east of Morgan Summit. The closure is expected to last until the end of September.
While Mt. Lassen Avenue will remain open, access within the closed area will be granted to property owners and emergency personnel as necessary. The Hole in the Ground Campground is closed due to damage from the Park Fire, and a forest closure is still in effect in much of the affected area.
This highway closure is essential for expediting postfire emergency restorations and for the removal of hazardous trees—estimated to be between 4,000 to 5,000—that were damaged in the fire. Caltrans emphasizes the importance of these efforts for the safety of both the traveling public and local residents.
