The Groundhog Fever Festival in Quincy, featuring the town’s own prognosticating groundhog, Chuck Wood, celebrated its 13th year with a lively gathering despite rainy weather on February 1st. This local event, known for its enthusiasm and quirky charm, was created to fill the post-holiday lull in downtown activities and has become a beloved tradition.
Organized initially by the Quincy Revival Committee and now managed by the Quincy Chamber of Commerce, the festival includes a variety of activities such as live music, a chili cook-off, zumba, ice sculpting, and more. This year, attendees enjoyed the return of classic events like the Flip Cup Fight and “The Bach” auction, as well as the introduction of new elements for children, including balloon animals and carnival games by Quircus.
The chili cook-off was a highlight, with Shawn Adams and Dale Hays winning the People’s Choice Award. Plumas Bank took home the Judges’ Choice, and the Best-Dressed Booth award went to Leon and Roy’s.
Chuck Wood, the festival’s star, was ceremoniously brought out to make his prediction. Convincing Chuck to emerge required a symbolic pardon from Honorary Mayor Saul Wilson, which delighted the crowd. Chuck confidently predicted an early spring for 2025, continuing his streak of accurate forecasts.
Overall, the festival successfully brought the community together, blending humor, tradition, and local flair, making it a cherished event in Quincy.
