Human Remains Discovered in Mendocino National Forest, Investigation Underway

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation following the discovery of human skeletal remains in the Mendocino National Forest. The remains were found just north of Lucerne on February 12, 2025, at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Upon receiving the report, members of the Major Crimes Unit and the Coroner’s Unit, with assistance from the United States Forest Service, promptly arrived at the scene to begin their investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office is collaborating closely with the county’s forensic pathologist to examine the remains. Plans are in place to send the remains to the California Department of Justice for further analysis. This step is crucial to ascertain the identity of the deceased and determine the cause of death.
