Dollar General Literacy Foundation Awards $80,000 in Grants to Support California Literacy Programs

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has announced the allocation of nearly $80,000 in literacy grants to various nonprofit organizations, libraries, and schools in California. This funding is part of a landmark one-day donation totaling over $13.2 million aimed at supporting adult, family, and summer literacy programs across the 48 states where Dollar General operates.

Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, emphasized the organization’s long-standing commitment to enhancing literacy and basic education in local communities. The recently awarded grants are projected to benefit more than 3,500 individuals in California.

Grants are designated for initiatives within a 15-mile radius of Dollar General stores or distribution centers, supporting the implementation of new literacy programs or the expansion of existing ones. Funding can be utilized for the acquisition of new technology, books, materials, or software aimed at improving literacy efforts.

Additionally, the Foundation is set to launch its sixth annual The Yellow Glasses Project campaign on July 21, 2025, allowing customers to purchase yellow sunglasses at Dollar General stores for $2, with proceeds benefiting the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded over $271 million in grants, helping more than 23 million individuals improve their literacy skills, attain general education diplomas, or achieve English proficiency.
