Northern California’s Dixon Police Department is reinstating its Bait Package program to combat package theft, commonly known as “porch piracy.” The initiative involves placing ordinary-looking parcels equipped with GPS trackers around the city. When someone attempts to steal a bait package, officers are immediately alerted and can respond quickly to catch the thief.

Dixon Police Chief Robert Thompson emphasized the program’s goal: to allow residents to enjoy their deliveries without fear of theft. The department is seeking volunteers willing to have bait packages discreetly placed at their homes. Interested residents can contact [email protected] to participate.

To further protect deliveries this season, the Dixon Police Department recommends:

  • Tracking packages and bringing them inside promptly.
  • Providing delivery instructions to leave packages in less visible locations.
  • Using secure delivery options like lockboxes or package lockers.
  • Asking trusted neighbors to collect packages.
  • Scheduling deliveries for times when someone is home.
  • Installing doorbell or exterior cameras.

  • Keeping porches tidy to help detect suspicious activity.

These combined efforts aim to reduce porch piracy and keep neighborhoods safe during the busy delivery season.
