Coyote mating season has begun in northern California, and it will continue through the month of March (with February seeing the peak of activity). Please be aware that coyotes will be traveling longer distances to find potential mates, and will be more active in general during this time. Use caution while driving and keep an eye out for coyotes crossing roadways more frequently. Males tend to be more aggressive and less timid this time of the year as well, so you’ll want to be a little extra cautious when it comes to protecting your pets (especially unspayed female dogs that may attract male coyotes). If you live in an area where they may be hunting or passing through while in pursuit of finding a love match, please don’t leave your cats and dogs (or small children) unattended in your yards. Coyotes have been known to climb fences, and can be quite wily. Don’t underestimate their ability to get into fenced areas, and shine a flash light around your yard at night before letting your dogs out to make sure they aren’t in the vicinity.
