On July 27, 2024, at approximately 6:11 PM, units from the Susanville Fire Department (SFD) responded to a vegetation fire near Skyline Road and Highway 36 in the Susan River fire district.

Hose packs were quickly deployed and a fire attack started with a progressive hose lay. High winds caused the fire to spread rapidly, but with the assistance of a partial Cal-Fire hand crew, forward progression was stopped by 8:40 PM. Crews then began mop-up operations to secure the fire line, with mop-up continuing until all heat was extinguished.

The fire originated in a homeless encampment, and the cause is still under investigation. One firefighter sustained injuries, but there were no civilian casualties.
