ALMANOR, California — The Bass Angler Magazine (BAM) Tournament Trail has confirmed the tragic passing of kayak angler Ryon Mora, 38, during the BAM Kayak Series event at Lake Almanor on May 17, 2025.
The tournament began with overcast skies and a mild breeze. At 6:37 a.m., BAM Tournament Director Michael Bray received a call about an unmanned kayak on the lake. BAM staff, including CEO Mark Lassagne, quickly responded to the GPS coordinates and located Ryon Mora in the water at approximately 6:42 a.m.
Despite wearing his personal flotation device (PFD), Ryon was found unresponsive when pulled into the BAM media boat. Emergency services were contacted, and CPR was initiated as they made their way to meet paramedics. Upon arrival at a nearby dock at approximately 6:47 a.m., emergency personnel continued efforts to revive him for over 45 minutes, but unfortunately, he could not be resuscitated.
The cause of death is currently under investigation by the Plumas County Sheriff’s Department.
In light of this tragedy, the tournament was immediately canceled, and updates regarding the BAM Kayak Series schedule will be provided soon.
Ryon was a respected member of the kayak fishing community, known for his dedication and camaraderie. He adhered to all safety protocols while participating in the event. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of outdoor activities.
