The Susanville Police Department is reminding motorists to slow down as part of its ongoing “Slow the Fast Down” traffic safety campaign aimed at reducing speeding-related crashes.
Throughout July and continuing into the coming weeks, the department has deployed additional officers to patrol city streets, focusing on drivers exceeding posted speed limits or traveling too fast for road conditions.
Speeding continues to be a leading cause of serious and fatal crashes. According to the 2025 California Traffic Safety Survey, it remains the top roadway safety concern among California drivers. Even small increases in speed reduce reaction time and significantly increase the severity of collisions.
Nationally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 11,288 people were killed in speeding-related crashes in 2024, accounting for 29 percent of all traffic fatalities. In California, 1,139 people lost their lives in speeding-related crashes during the same year.
Police encourage drivers to help improve roadway safety by planning ahead, allowing extra travel time, obeying posted speed limits, especially in school and work zones, adjusting speeds for weather and traffic conditions, and avoiding aggressive driving behaviors such as tailgating and weaving through traffic.
The department reminds motorists that slowing down is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent crashes and ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.
