Susanville Fire Department is urging everyone to be extremely cautious about where they discard cigarette butts and how they use outdoor power equipment, as conditions remain excessively dry in the high heat.

The fire department responded to a grass fire near Robbs Way and Riverside Drive on Friday afternoon. Units arrived on the scene while the city’s #1 Truck assisted with a traffic collision just 10 minutes before the fire broke out. Thanks to the quick response, the fire was contained to a quarter of an acre. Susanville’s seasonal firefighters, off-duty firefighters, and volunteer staff responded and assisted with mop-up and completed ensuring the fire was completely out.

Assistant Fire Chief Hernandez says transients in the area caused the fire, though the exact ignition source is undetermined.

CalFire, the Susanville Police Department, and the Susan River Fire Protection District supported the Susanville Fire Department. Fortunately, no firefighter injuries were reported.
