On May 21, 2025, at approximately 9:00 P.M., the Susanville California Highway Patrol (CHP) Communications Center received an emergency call reporting a possible stolen vehicle in the City of Portola. The vehicle was described as a red 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck, and the suspect was identified as Dane Wiski of Portola, CA. The caller also reported the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol.
Multiple law enforcement units responded and began searching for the vehicle. Soon after, additional 911 calls reported the vehicle traveling eastbound on SR-70 toward US-395—driving in the wrong lane, at a high rate of speed, and without headlights.
A Quincy CHP officer assigned to the Portola Resident Post located the vehicle driving erratically. The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver initially failed to yield. After briefly stopping on the shoulder, the suspect fled again, continuing eastbound in the wrong lane.
The vehicle eventually pulled into the Hallelujah Junction gas station, where the suspect initially refused to comply with commands. Shortly after, Dane Wiski was taken into custody without further incident.
The investigation revealed Wiski was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested for the following:
• Driving under the influence of alcohol (Misdemeanor)
•. Driving under the influence of alcohol with BAC over 0.08% (Misdemeanor)
•. Vehicle Theft (Felony)
• Possession of Stolen Property (Felony)
• Felony Evading (Felony)
• Driving on a Suspended License (Misdemeanor)
Thanks to the quick actions of our CHP officer and the vigilance of community members who called in, this dangerous situation was brought to a safe resolution.
We extend our gratitude to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, and the Susanville CHP Office for their assistance in this case. Your continued partnership helps keep our communities safe.
