Quick work with the help of an excavator, contractors, and Caltrans crews cleared SR 70 and re-open the highway in record time. You can now travel between Jardo Gap and Greenville Wye, following the midnight highway closure due to a rock slide. Crews removed around 380 cubic yards that slid down the steep hillside just 2 miles east of Belden.
This is the third major slide occurring in roughly the same area of the canyon following the Dixie Fire that burnt much of the vegetation that held the sheer wall of rock in place. Previous slides closed the highway for several weeks following heavy rainfall as well. The canyon stability likely will remain a hazard as inclement weather can continue to erode the canyon.
