Local responders shared the miraculous story over social media of the heartwarming reunion as Sheryl, the sole survivor of a horrific car accident outside Susanville in August 2023, returned to thank the emergency personnel who saved her life. The crash, which claimed the lives of others, left Sheryl critically injured. CHP officers on scene said nearly every bone in her body was broken. Now, almost 14 months later, she is walking, talking, and full of gratitude.

Flying in from Arizona with her son and daughter, Sheryl made it a priority to meet with the first responders who worked tirelessly to save her. Her visit was part of her own healing journey, but for the officers, firefighters, and medical personnel involved, the reunion meant even more.

“It’s rare that we ever find out what happens to people after they’re airlifted from crash scenes,” said one responder. “To see Sheryl here today, strong and full of life, is a reminder of why we do what we do.”

Sheryl expressed her immense gratitude, but the sentiment was mutual. The Janesville Fire Protection District and Susanville CHP officers, some of whom were off-duty but still responded to the crash, were deeply touched by her visit. They noted how rare it is to witness a positive outcome in such devastating incidents.
In addition to her heartfelt thanks, Sheryl made a generous donation to the Janesville Fire Volunteer Association, further cementing the bond between her and the community that helped save her life.

Sheryl came to California to thank the first responders, but they expressed their gratitude to her instead, saying she helped heal their hearts as well.

Thank you Susanville CHP and Janesville Fire for sharing Sheryl’s story.
