The Modoc County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Association recently celebrated a successful milestone as its annual K-9 Fundraiser Dinner sold out swiftly, with all 100 tickets purchased by community members. This event, now in its tenth year, has become a cherished tradition since its inception in 2015, aimed at supporting the K-9 program of the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office.

Scheduled for April 12, 2025, at The Brass Rail in Alturas, the evening promises an engaging experience with a rib steak dinner, dessert, and activities such as auctions and drawings. Items up for grabs include firearms, a gun safe, and gift certificates, along with Reno Aces Tickets. The funds raised will directly support the K-9 unit’s training, equipment, and veterinary care.

The K-9 unit plays a crucial role in various operations, including narcotics detection and search and rescue missions, significantly enhancing community safety. The success of last year’s fundraiser allowed for the addition of a dash camera system in a K-9 vehicle, emphasizing transparency and documentation of field interactions.

The current K-9 team features three specialized dogs: Gnash, Hogle, and Jax, each trained in specific areas such as narcotics detection and tracking. The unit’s capability in locating missing persons, especially in critical situations, underscores its vital contribution to community safety.

With training and equipment costs being substantial, community support remains vital. The Modoc County K-9 Program, established in 2014, continues to be an integral part of local law enforcement efforts. Sheriff Tex Dowdy expressed appreciation for the community’s support, which ensures the continued efficacy and readiness of the K-9 team.
