The Susanville Fire Department’s highly anticipated annual open house is making a return this Saturday, offering a day packed with family fun and essential fire safety education. This beloved tradition draws crowds eager for fire truck rides on one of Susanville’s original engines, firefighter obstacle courses, food, and refreshments, but this year, there’s an added benefit.

The American Red Cross will have a booth at the open house with representatives handing out free smoke alarms, and will even schedule a time to install your free smoke alarm in your home. The promotion is part of their Sound the Alarm Campaign, which aligns perfectly with the theme of this year’s National Fire Prevention Week, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!”

The timing couldn’t be better, as the campaign, which started October 6th, emphasizes the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home.

Engineer Hoffman emphasizes the importance of properly working smoke detectors in your home stating as the area enters into the colder months with homes lighting fires and space heaters, house fires are more prevalent. Hoffman reminds you that most fires caused by these heating sources typically happen in the early morning hours while the house is fast asleep. Without properly working smoke detectors, by the time you wake up to the smell of smoke, “it could be too late.”

Festivities this Saturday include the Susanville Fires Edith trailer, an interactive tool designed to teach families crucial fire prevention tips. Susanville Fire Cadets will help you create a home emergency escape plan and practice responding to a fire.

This open house provides not only entertainment but life-saving knowledge and resources that could make a lasting impact to your safety.

Families are encouraged to join in the event to meet local firefighters, explore fire trucks, and walk away with valuable safety information—and a smoke alarm to install at home, courtesy of the Red Cross.

The open house will be at the fire hall on Main street in Susanville starting at 10 am. If you’re on the roads be on the lookout for the historic Susanville fire truck that will be taking attendees on a route around uptown back to the station.
