Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has issued a cautionary advisory for the public regarding increased water flows on the North Fork Feather River during the weekend of July 27-28. The advisory emphasizes heightened safety measures for individuals engaging in whitewater recreation.
The section of the river in question, known as the Rock Creek Reach, is recognized for its challenging rapids, classified as Class III, IV, and V. These conditions are suitable only for experienced paddlers and are deemed unsafe for tubing.
The Rock Creek Reach is an 8.3-mile segment of the North Fork of the Feather River, situated within the Plumas National Forest, between PG&E’s Rock Creek Dam and the Rock Creek Powerhouse near Storrie.
On Saturday, July 27, water flows will surge to 1,100 cubic feet per second (cfs) starting at 9 a.m.
By Sunday, June 30, flows will be maintained at 900 cfs until 2 p.m., before reducing to a more typical seasonal flow of approximately 400 cfs.
Additional recreational flows are planned for the weekends of August 24-25 and September 28-29.
PG&E underscores the importance of adhering to the following safety tips: avoid cold water. Sudden immersion in cold water can cause “gasp reflex,” leading to potential drowning or cardiac arrest.
Unseen Obstacles: swift water may conceal underwater hazards. Guided trips for novices are advised.
Stay Clear of canals and flumes: these areas pose a significant danger due to slippery surfaces and rapid water movement.
