Sierra County Sheriff’s Office issued the following press release.

The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office is notifying the public of a mountain lion sighting that occurred this morning in the town of Downieville. At approximately 5:25 A.M., a county maintenance worker encountered a mountain lion outside of the Downieville Courthouse. Upon seeing the worker, the animal ran in the direction of the medical clinic.
While mountain lion sightings are not uncommon throughout Sierra County, activity within town limits particularly in close proximity to houses increase the likelihood of human-wildlife encounters and conflict.
Residents and visitors are asked to remain alert and to promptly report any mountain lion sightings in or around Downieville. Timely reporting assists the Sheriff’s Office and partner agencies in coordinating appropriate response actions.
To reduce the likelihood of wildlife conflict:
Avoid walking alone during dawn and dusk when mountain lions are most active
Keep children close and under direct supervision outdoors
Do not allow pets outdoors unsupervised and keep dogs leashed
Do not run if you encounter a mountain lion, stand your ground, make yourself appear larger, and back away slowly
Secure garbage and remove attractants such as pet food from outside
Please report sightings by contacting Sheriff’s Dispatch at (530) 289-3700 (24/7) or by emailing [email protected]. If possible, include photographs or video when submitting reports via email.
