The Sierras and surrounding areas may welcome the first day of spring under a blanket of snow. The Climate Prediction Center’s latest two-week Hazard Outlook indicates a Slight Risk (20%) of Heavy Precipitation for northern California & and up to a 40% chance of Heavy Snow for the mountains, including the sierras down to the Coastal Range.
The Governor has already declared a state of emergency for Sierra county, along with 12 other counties stretching across the state, as a result of the latest storms. The proclamation will support disaster response and relief. Cal OES is working with Caltrans and County officials to bring in additional snow plows and road crews, and personnel from CAL FIRE and the California National Guard are on standby. The state is also contracting with private companies to accelerate snow removal and clear roadways. It is coordinating with investor-owned utilities to rapidly restore power in the southernmost counties.
Today will be the last relief from snow before another major system moves in overnight, making your weekend travel near impossible over the passes; prepare for long delays.
