Over a dozen small fires have popped up throughout the region’s national forests as Thunderstorms produce multiple lightning strikes. One just sparking on the Almanor Ranger District, in the Lassen National Forest at the McClure Place trailhead. That’s 5 miles southeast of Paynes Creek. Named, The Deadhorse Incident, the fire burned one acre and is fully contained. A helicopter & crew from the CAL FIRE Tehama-Glenn Unit were responsible for knocking down the flames.
Just over the weekend, another small lightning-caused fire happened in the Eagle Lake Ranger District, called the crater fire, as it burned about a quarter of an acre on top of Crater Mountain. Lassen National Forest firefighters had to build a containment line around the flames with the help of the CAL FIRE Lassen-Modoc Unit.
Both Plumas and Modoc NFs have reported multiple fires over the last few weeks, all quickly contained around, if not under, an acre in size.
The forest service reminds you that lightning is expected to continue with storms coming in and out of the area over the next few weeks, and if you see smoke, call 911 and report it.
