Historic snowpack forces a hard-to-make decision to postpone a long-standing youth event in Susanville.
Wade Workman, who heads the Jr. Fishing Derby with the Lassen Sportsman Club, has been forced to cancel this weekend’s Jr fishing derby after speaking with Susanville Fire Chief James Moore.
Workman says that due to his input, the City of Susanville Senior Staff and the Fishing Derby Committee needed to decide to hold off on this weekend’s Junior Fishing Derby but will move the event to sometime in August.
The Susan River is predicted to have flows in excess of what is considered safe, above 900cfs. Given the high flows, very warm air temperatures, and freezing water temperature, anyone falling in would be in immediate distress and facing a difficult rescue situation. Workman says, “The only correct decision is to postpone until a later date.”
The club will reconvene and begin plans for the derby in August.
