Get ready to cast your lines as the highly anticipated Junior Fishing Derby is making its grand return to Memorial Park. This well-loved annual event, now in its 34th year, has been announced by Wade Workman with the Lassen Sportsman Club to the Susanville City council, who are proud to co-sponsor the event.
The Junior Fishing Derby, open to participants between the ages of 2 and 15, is the only event in the state that occurs outside of the opening season. It has become a beloved tradition spanning three generations, attracting over 300 young anglers each year. Thanks to the help of fish and game, the Susan River and Paiute Creek, which run through Memorial Park, will be stocked with hundreds of fish before the event.
During the derby, young anglers on average reel in around 400 fish, with prizes going to the top three winners in each of the three age categories. Exciting prizes such as bikes, fishing poles, and tackle boxes will be up for grabs. The angler with the biggest catch of the tournament will receive the coveted, traditional, locally-made custom rod.
Registration for the Junior Fishing Derby will end at 9 am on the morning of the event, which will take place on May 20th.
Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to reel in some big catches and win some fantastic prizes.
