The Lassen Science Bowl team, made up of students aged 9 to 12, competed at the Far Nor Cal Science Bowl on March 4th at Shasta College. The competition welcomed teams from nine Northern California counties in middle and high school divisions. Over 100 volunteers helped run the competition, which tested students’ academic prowess in categories such as Chemistry, Biology, Earth and Space Science, Physics, Energy, and Math.
Lassen’s team, led by Captain Jeremy Nielsen and comprised of Seamus Hays, Whitney Kellogg, and Elijah Tuttle, had a strong showing. After winning five out of six matches in the Round-Robin pools, they were seeded second in the playoffs. They then beat Foothill 2 and Chico 2 to earn a spot in the final match against U-Prep 1.
Lassen took an early lead in the final match but lost it to U-Prep after several unanswered toss-up questions. However, Lassen fought back and regained the lead at the end of the first half. The two teams traded correct responses in the second half, but U-Prep ultimately pulled ahead and won the championship by 52-44.
Despite missing out on a trip to the National Science Bowl competition, Lassen had its best showing since 2018 and thanked their coach, driver, and sponsors for their support. Congratulations to Lassen and all the Far Nor Cal Science Bowl teams.
